Brighton Psyhcotherapy

Memory

In all my work I offer a safe and confidential space for us to explore whatever brings you to therapy and sometimes a deeper exploration is needed, particularly when events from your past continue to influence your present and future.  Indeed often "symptoms" such as anxiety and depression are the result of our consciously or unconsciously avoiding the emotional impact of difficult experiences from our past.

As an Integrative Psychotherapist I draw on more than one theory of change but I am strongly influenced by Coherence Therapy (also known as Memory Reconsolidation) and parts work, including Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Inner Relationship Focusing. Fundamentally my approach would be to explore what conflict there may be between different parts of you and look at your difficulties across what, how and why dimensions:

•    What the problem is
•    How it is causing you difficulties
•    Why the problem might previously have been a creative, unconscious solution to another issue.

The aim of this work is to increase your awareness of your own agency and innate wisdom to help make sense of the fact that however much effort you have made to overcome the problem, somehow it persists. Often this is because whilst we might know intellectually that our reactions are "irrational", on an emotional level they are coherent and even protective.

This approach can be especially helpful with the following problems:

•    Trauma and post traumatic syndromes
•    Anxiety and panic attacks
•    Phobias
•    Low self esteem
•    Repetitive relationship difficulties
